2013 So Far

Devils Lake

Hey figured I would update you all with some adventures that have taken place so far in 2013 and sadly haven’t gotten around to making individual posts.

Out Snowshoeing

Beautiful day out snowshoeing

First I would like to mention that I started to take classes again back in January and have just wrapped up for the semester to further pursue my degree while I am working at Mercury Marine. But I may be in classes and work, I have tried to not let this slow me down, and I don’t think it has.

Sledding

Fun time Sledding

With the busy schedule of mine it is frequent you may find me outside, while there was snow on the ground I was busy trying to go out snowshoeing. Also went sledding a couple of times with some friends from my bible study group and one of their houses that has a giant hill and tow rope in the yard.

January and February as always was FIRST Robotics time and I continue to help mentor FRC Team 2194 Fondy Fire in the software aspect of the team, be it with the website or with the robot.

I also had the ability to travel for work back to Iowa State for the Spring Engineering Career Fair and scouting for possible full-time as well as co-op candidates. Now that I own a vehicle I traveled down before the rest of the crew so I could actually be there and spend some time with my friends that I hadn’t really seen much of since I left Iowa State.

March Backpacking

Backpacking trip in March

As the weather has been getting progressively warmer I have been getting out backpacking with the Fox Cities Area Backpacking Meetup Group. I joined the group back in the Fall and there hadn’t been many trips that interested me during the winter but there have been plenty of trips already this year. So far I have been on 3 trips with all of them being out in the Kettle Moraine Forest Northern Unit but they have been on different parts of the trials. On first trip back in March there was still a lot of snow on the trail that required snowshoes which everyone in the group left theirs in their car besides me. So I was blazing down the trail as the others ended up at times going knee-deep in snow. Our more recent trip was  over Cinco de Mayo weekend which to honor that we had a taco bar that was setup for dinner one night which tasted fantastic.

Refs at FLL World Festival

FIRST LEGO League World Festival Refs 2013

Back in the end of April I ended up going done to St. Louis for my second year at the FIRST World Championship event. But this year I wasn’t a part of Iowa but from Wisconsin. I once again was a referee for the FIRST LEGO League at the event. Unlike most people who book a hotel, myself and 3 others ended up staying at a KOA campground to save on the expenses and wasn’t bad at all. Hey for what I am used to this was a hotel. In addition to being just a volunteer, Fondy Fire was able to attend the event and competed. As always this event is perfect for networking and meeting people, including I meet and shook Will.i.am’s hand one morning as well as catching up with people I meet two years ago. Before leaving St. Louis I had to stop at the St. Louis City Museum which was a blast to explore. I may be more of an adult but I am for sure young at heart and always up to play. Sadly all the fun and play in St. Louis had to come to an end.

Most recently just this past weekend myself and some friends from my bible study headed out to Devils Lake State Park in Wisconsin for a night of camping and a day of fun. Devils Lake is probably the most known and most popular State Park in Wisconsin and I don’t blame anyone. It has a nice location, has a Lake in the middle of the park, bluffs on either side of the lake with amazing scenic overlooks, plenty of trails ranging in difficulty, large number of routes to go rock climbing on, and more. While we showed up Friday night had a good time around the fire but then Saturday went out hiking on the trails as well as did some rock climbing where a couple of my friends tried rock climbing outside for their first time before we ended up coming home.

So as you can see there have been a lot of adventures that have taken place since the last post in January, but they have all been fun and enjoyable and that is what matters. As some adventures are smaller than others it is all about what you make of the adventure to make sure you have stories to share.

I may have had a number of adventures already and summer is just beginning there are some plans that are already being worked on that I am more than happy to share with you. Very soon I am planning on going backpacking with some friends from back in Minnesota and we will be going up on the Superior Hiking Trail near Lutsen area for a weekend. I’m looking forward(kinda) to having a roommate. He is actually a good friend from Iowa State that will be having a Co-op adventure with Mercury Marine until December. Tough part is he is moving in with me in the one bedroom apartment which we will make do with the room. Last major upcoming adventure is one I am excited and looking forward to going on. There is a group of us that I have met from the backpacking meetup group that will be traveling out to Colorado for a week and will be backpacking in the backcountry of Rocky Mountain National Park as well as planning on going up Long’s Peak. Don’t worry I will do my best to provide a trip report but for now I think it is time to let you go.

Hopefully you are going out and making adventures of your own, whether it is an hour adventure or a month, make sure you go out and have fun.

First Rainier Summits of 2013!!!

So I’m sorry I have neglected to update my blog on this amazing achievement but from our recent climbing expedition to Mount Rainier at the end of December beginning of January ended with all 8 of us reaching the summit! We reached the summit on the night of Wednesday January 2nd 2013 at 8:28PM. With this summit we are now part of the less than 5% that reach the summit that attempt during the winter season becoming both the first summits of 2013 but also the first to summit the mountain this winter season. I won’t say to much right now about the trip but I will create posts of the trip with photos in the near future once I’m able to get a few things settled down now that I’m back. But below are currently two articles that have been posted of our trip.

Ice Climbing

Overview of the park, Walls behind trees where the ice is located.

So this past Saturday I introduced my father, sister, her boyfriend, and a friends father (past scout leader and family friend) to Ice Climbing. Ice Climbing is a division in the climbing world that is done during the winter scaling vertical ice typically formed from waterfalls or other misc. water runoff but it may also be “farmed” (purposely sprayed water to form the ice).

We went up to an old Quarry in Sandstone, MN where ice is farmed in this park with support for climbing from the City of Sandstone and the Minnesota Climbers Association (MCA). Sandstone is located a bit over an hour north of the Twin Cities area and about 10 min north of Hinckley. Of course since Hinckley is the home of Tobies we had to stop on our way and get ourselves some Rolls.

Sandstone is a great place to go ice climbing within close range of the twin cities. We spent a good deal of time there teaching both ice climbing and belay skills to some as well as just having fun. We also brought a dutch oven with and made Hamburger Hotdish for a late lunch snack.

Ice climbing is fairly simple to do in my opinion but can be tiring for those that have never done it before. So if you have a chance to get out and go ice climbing go out and try it and you will have fun, just make sure to dress for the weather as that can make or break the climbing trip. Below are some of our pictures during the climb. Let me know if you are curious about more information about ice climbing.

Getting Ready

Sorry once again I fail on consistently updating my blog especially when I have been out on different adventures. Well I will try my best for the rest of the year and keep you updated as well as for the new year(I’ll make this one of my resolutions).

Well anyways if you haven’t heard from me or know I am planning on going back to Mount Rainier after Christmas in December and going into the new year on the Mountain. Yes myself and about 7-9 other people with the Iowa State Mountaineering and Climbing club are going to attempt a winter summit climb of Mount Rainier. We have been doing a lot of training and the group has been working on learning different skills to help prepare ourselves for months now.

We are approaching the trip date now(countdown on the sidebar :) ) so we are getting our gear ready and making sure we have all that we need, adjusting training to better ready us for the trip, and figuring out all the last minor details. I will do my best to keep you up to date with what is going on prior to the trip and then will have to provide updates once we are off the mountain seeing as I won’t be bringing my computer with me. Below is a snapshot I got of a good portion of my gear ready to get packed as well as video providing a simulation of one of the possible routes we will take for those that haven’t been to the mountain or have attempted a climb. I also plan to capture a lot of video and will attempt to edit together some documentary or video of the trip. Feel free to comment or email me if you have any questions.

New News

578451_4439136139011_337173522_n

So once again I’m sorry. Some point soon I shall get back to getting some posts added regularly hopefully starting now!

The past couple of months have been pretty busy and some new and exciting things taking place. One thing is Mercury Marine has decided to hire me on full-time out of my Internship I have had with them since January. Sad thing about this is not going back to Iowa State and seeing all my friends and participating in all the activities I was involved with but this is an exciting step in my life. It has been a lot of new as I have been adjusting to this new life.

Also I had the chance of going back home to be in my cousin’s wedding. They had a beautiful wedding that took place outside and there could not have been any better weather for it. Him and his now wife are great together and I wish them the best for their marriage and new life and future adventures they will be making with each other both good and bad.

Well this is all I’m gonna get to tonight but I plan to get some posts out here soon with some of the adventures I happened to have over the past many months. I hope your Labor Day was great and that as school starts out for some of you the best of luck.

Enjoyable Bike Ride

So this past weekend I decided Friday night that I should go on a biking adventure around the largest inland lake in Wisconsin, Lake Winnebago. So i prepped my bike with a couple of repairs so I was ready to go when I woke up.

I didn’t start to get out-of-town til about 1pm after making a couple other stops, but I began on my 80+ mile bike ride that I had ahead of me. I started by going up the east side around the north and then down the west side. There was at least 25mph winds coming from the west which was fun at times trying to keep myself upright and even a couple of times got blown into the ditch.

The weather was perfect to be out riding, there was at one point there was a light shower but it felt good and didn’t last that long. I stopped at a Dairy Queen in Neenah for some supper before I continued on. Later as I was heading out of Oshkosh I came across a cool little drive in eatery which I stopped and got myself a Root Bear Float.

When I had about 30 miles left of my trip I ended up finding a way to entertain myself after spending hours alone already on my bike. I started to sing along to my music into my GoPro camera. This kept me entertained til I got all the way back home. I uploaded one of the videos to my YouTube channel and have included it below for you to enjoy. *EDIT* Which I seem to be having issues with getting it to embed so here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F90Fm928orA

I was on my bike for about 95 miles with a total movement time of 6hrs and 11minutes during Saturday from the trip, side routes, and around town. If you want to see the route I traveled, there is a Map below.

I’m Back

Sorry I didn’t post sooner. But I will provide a more detailed post hopefully some evening this week. But I figured I should let you know that I have been off the Mountain since the evening of Thursday May 10th.

A brief overview of the trip, we arrived at the base Monday Afternoon and climbed up to Camp Muir(~10,000ft) which acted as our base camp. Tuesday Day 2 on the Mountain we did self arrest practicing. Wednesday Day 3 we hiked up to Ingraham Flats at about 11,000ft and did crevasse rescue practice and prepped for our summit attempt. Thursday Day 4, eight of us started out to make the summit attempt. At about 12,500ft we watched the sunrise and four people weren’t ready to make it to the summit from there mainly due to being a little exhausted and that we needed to pick up our pace. So 4 went back to base camp and the remaining 4 of us pushed toward the summit. We made the crater summit at about 8:30am and lasted all of about 5 minutes due to it being sub-zero temps with at least 45+mph winds. So we through last layers on, took pictures, and ran off the summit.

On Friday we made a half day trip into Seattle at the Pike Street Market, with myself and another splitting up and staying the night there which then I ended up road tripping down with him to San Francisco which I flew from there to Phoenix to Milwaukee arriving late Sunday night.

Like I said I’ll get some more detailed events posted in the near future with some pictures but just wanted you guys to not worry. This was definitely an adventure I will remember forever and I can’t wait to get back on that mountain or maybe a bigger one.

It’s Finally HERE!!!

So i write to you from the Des Moines, IA Greyhound Depot Station. What this means is I am almost to Ames, IA to meet up with the rest of the climbing crew for our Mount Rainier Expedition. I have been having the fun of traveling via bus due to my lack of transportation. So I have traveled from Fond Du Lac to Chicago. In Chicago I got myself some pizza on the way between the stations I had to walk. It was a little cloud covered too as well. Then I went from Chicago to Des Moines arriving at about 6:00am which I found a coffee shop to spend some time there before walking to the Depot Station.

I just have this one last bus to get to Ames and once I’m there I will be meeting up with the rest of the crew and help finish with our last-minute preparations. I am super excited about the trip as it has been in the thoughts and planning for the long time not including the training we have been doing since January.

Only depressing part is that once we load up into our 15 passenger van w/ trailer tonight, we won’t be getting on the mountain til Monday. But we will be getting closer each minute as our anticipation grows.
